EN: As you probably know, La Gioale was the only Romanian sports media that got accreditation for the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship and we stayed 2 weeks in Finland, creating 15 chronicles. This was possible with the help of our followers’ donations, our collaboration with Albini Prassa and with personal funds. Here you can read, both in English and Romanian, our last chronicle.

RO: După cum probabil știți, La Gioale a fost singura publicație românească de sport care a obținut o acreditare pentru Campionatul Mondial de Hochei pe Gheață din 2022. Am stat 2 săptămâni în Finlanda, producând 15 cronici, acest lucru find posibil cu ajutorul donațiilor primite din partea urmăritorilor, colaborării cu Albini Prassa și prin fonduri personale. As we announced yesterday, our stay in Finland for the Ice Hockey World Championship, 2022, organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), ends today.

And what a crazy ending we witnessed!!!

Yesterday was a magical day for  Finland, for Leijonat, but also for the whole European hockey,  the Czech Republic, Česká hokejová, achieving its best ranking in the last ten years.

The Czech Republic has participated 29 times in the World Ice Hockey Championship, every time being in the first world echelon, where it won  gold six times (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2010),  silver once (2006), and  bronze also six times (1993, 1997, 1998, 2011, 2012, 2022). The last three duels to win the bronze medals did not have happy endings for the lions: in 2014 they lost against  Sweden, in Minsk : score 0-3; in 2015, they were defeated by  the USA, “at home”, in Prague  score: 0-3 (the moment coincided with the retirement of Jaromir Jagr); and in 2019, in Bratislava , they lost to  Russia score: 2-3 (after penalty shots).

 Fun fact: almost 1% of the Czech population is registered in an organised form of ice hockey (85000 men and 4200 women practice this sport).

The Czech Republic started the sporting event from the worst position since its establishment – the 7th place in the world (surpassed by Switzerland), regaining its sixth place after yesterday’s game. Part of the “Big Six” – the six most successful national ice hockey teams – along with Canada, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States, the Czech Republic succeeded, led by captain Roman Červenka (36, Rapperswil-Jona Lakers), an extremely beautiful figure in the third-place match, also helped by the presence of David Pastrňák (26 years old Boston Bruins), who was able to participate only in seven matches of the national team (due to simultaneous participation in the NHL, until the elimination from the playoff of his club team – Boston Bruins).

The final score of the match was CZE-USA 8-4, after a difficult start for the European team. The USA took the lead in the first half with the chances, but also with the finishes, managing to score in all possible situations: Karson Kuhlman (26, Seattle Kraken) opened the score in minute 09:33, Adam Gaudette (25, Ottawa Senators ) defeated the Czech goalkeeper Karel Vejmelka (26 years old, Arizona Coyotes) in minute 12:14, and the end of the game brought the most painful goal for the Czech Republic, also Karson Kuhlman managing to push the puck into the opponent’s goal in numerical inferiority. Although the difference was reduced in minute 15:19 by the Czech Jiri Cernoch (25 years old, Karlovy Vary), the first half ended with an advantage that seemed reassuring at the time for the USA.

The second half started for the Czechs in a new formula, the goalkeeper Vejmelka,  being substituted by Marek Langhamer (27 years old, Ilves Tampere), who had only played in two group matches, this tournament being his first appearance in the national team jersey. He managed to defend the goal in a half that brought an equal number of opportunities for both teams. Jiří Smejkal (25, Lahti Pelicans) reduced the score difference to a single goal in minute 32:00.

 Fun fact: Jiří Smejkal participated in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (
aka EYOWF) organised in Brașov, in 2013, together with the U17 national team of the Czech Republic. Pius Suter (), Denis Malgin (), Timo Meier (), and Karel Vejmelka () also played in the tournament, all having very good evolutions this year, at the Ice Hockey World Championship.

The last period of the match for the bronze medals was a demonstration of strength, technique, and passion from the Czech hockey players, who managed to score from all possible positions and angles. The goals came as follows: minute 40:51 David Pastrňák, minute 42:29 Roman Červenka, minute 43:37 David Pastrňák, minute 54:42 (numerical inferiority) David Kampf (27 years old, Toronto Maple Leafs), minute 58:08 (empty goal) David Kampf, minute 59:23 (numerical superiority) David Pastrňák. The USA managed to score once more when it was already too late. Although Thomas Bordeleau (20 years old, San Jose Sharks) managed to score in minute 58:41, neither he nor his team were happy, as there was no chance for a medal for the North American team.

An extremely important contribution to this tournament had David Krejčí (36 years old, HC Olomouc), a former teammate of David Pastrňák at the Boston Bruins until last season, who managed to score three times in 10 matches and assist his teammates nine times.

 was facing a game that looked like last year’s final, when  won in overtime, through the goal of Nick Paul (27 years old, Tampa Bay Lighting).

The first half was one of getting to know the opponent, calm, with few opportunities for both teams, without penalties, and without any further notable events.

Last night, the North Americans started better, they opened the score in numerical superiority through the young Dylan Cozens (21 years old, Buffalo Sabers) in minute 24:00, and the advantage was kept until the last period.

Suomi scored only in the fifth minute of the last period when they were in double superiority, and Cole Sillinger (19 years old, Columbus Blue Jackets) has reasons to be upset, his elimination for “high sticking” is a bit easily granted (from the replays it even seemed unfair).

While he was on the bench, his opponents scored another goal (although this time in 5 vs. 4), the scorer for both being Mikael Granlund (30, Nashville Predators).

 Fun fact:  Mikael Granlund managed to overcome both Canadian goalkeepers within two minutes, scoring in minute 44:13 in the goal defended by Chris Driedger (28 years old, Seattle Kraken) and in minute 45:57 in the goal defended this time by Matt Tomkins (27 years old, Frölunda HC).

Although the Nordics made it 3-1 in minute 54:04, through the success of Joel Armia (28 years old, Montreal Canadiens) and everything seemed to be resolved, the Canadians scored twice at the end of the match, in 48 seconds, through Zach Whitecloud (25, Vegas Golden Knights) in minute 58:48 and Maxime Comtois (23, Anaheim Ducks) in minute 59:36, and pushed the game into overtime.

The decisive goal also came after a superiority awarded to Finland,  Thomas Chabot (25, Ottawa Senators) being penalised for a small but existing hooking, and the refereeing team was again uncompromising, like all evening, and Sakari Manninen (30, Ufa) won the gold medals for the Finns.

The post-match discussions about the refereeing were multiple, as we are used to after every decisive game, but the refereeing style was uniform, allowing few rules violations, perhaps surprising, for a World Championship final.

 Fun fact:  Canada, although it finished in the last place able to qualify in the quarterfinals in its group, had an extremely cohesive and strong team, with no less than 10 players in the top 30 scorers of the tournament, while  Finland had only four.

 Suomi wins well-deserved, it was the best team on the ice and had a small advantage over the Canadians. The Nordics manage a historical double:  gold at the Olympics,  gold at the World Cup and many will write about this generation for a long time!!!

 Roman Červenka was declared the most valuable striker of the tournament , with 17 points obtained in 10 matches, of which five goals and 12 assists.

 Jussi Olkinuora was declared the most valuable goalkeeper , but also the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament, evolving in all the matches played by his team and obtaining an incredible percentage of 94.83%.

 Mikko Lehtonen was declared the most valuable defender of the tournament, and is also an important pawn in attack – in the 10 matches played he scored 12 points, out of which two goals and 10 assists.

Așa cum vă anunțam încă de ieri, șederea noastră în Finlanda, cu ocazia Campionatului Mondial de Hochei pe Gheață, ediția 2022, organizat de International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), ia astăzi sfârșit.

Și la ce final nebun am luat parte!!!

Ieri a fost o zi magică pentru  Finlanda, pentru Leijonat, dar și pentru întreg hocheiul european, echipa  Republicii Cehe, Česká hokejová reprezentace, reușind cea mai bună clasare a sa din ultimii 10 ani.

Cehia a participat de 29 de ori la Campionatul Mondial de Hochei pe Gheață, toate participările fiind în primul eșalon mondial, unde a obținut  aurul de șase ori (1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2010),  argintul o singură dată (2006), iar  bronzul tot de șase ori (1993, 1997, 1998, 2011, 2012, 2022). Ultimele trei dueluri pentru a cuceri medaliile de bronz nu au avut finaluri fericite pentru lei: în 2014 au pierdut împotriva  Suediei, la Minsk , scor 0-3; în 2015, au fost învinși de  SUA, “acasă”, în Praga , scor 0-3 (momentul a coincis cu retragerea lui Jaromir Jagr); iar în 2019, la Bratislava , au cedat în fața  Rusiei, scor 2-3 (după penalty-uri).

 Fun fact: aproape 1% din populația Cehiei este înscrisă într-o formă organizată de hochei pe gheață (85000 de bărbați și 4200 de femei practică acest sport).

Cehia a început evenimentul sportiv de pe cea mai proastă poziție de la înființare – locul 7 mondial (devansată fiind de Elveția), recăpătându-și după ziua de ieri locul șase. Parte a “Big Six” – cele șase cele mai de succes echipe naționale de hochei pe gheață – alături de Canada, Finlanda, Rusia, Suedia și SUA, Cehia a reușit, condusă de căpitanul Roman Červenka (36 de ani, Rapperswil-Jona Lakers), o figură extrem de frumoasă în finala mică, ajutată și de prezența lui David Pastrňák (26 de ani Boston Bruins), care a putut participa la doar șapte meciuri ale naționalei (din cauza participării simultane în NHL, până la eliminarea din play-off a echipei sale de club – Boston Bruins).

Scorul final al partidei a fost CZE-USA 8-4, după un început greoi al echipei europene. SUA s-a ocupat în prima repriză cu ocaziile, dar și cu finalizările, reușind să înscrie în toate situațiile posibile: Karson Kuhlman (26 de ani, Seattle Kraken) a deschis scorul în minutul 09:33, Adam Gaudette (25 de ani, Ottawa Senators) l-a învins pe portarul ceh Karel Vejmelka (26 de ani, Arizona Coyotes) în minutul 12:14, iar finalul partidei a adus cel mai dureros gol pentru Cehia, tot Karson Kuhlman reușind să împingă pucul în poarta adversă în inferioritate numerică. Deși diferența a fost micșorată în minutul 15:19 de cehul Jiri Cernoch (25 de ani, Karlovy Vary), prima repriză s-a finalizat cu un avantaj care părea liniștitor la momentul respectiv pentru SUA.

A doua repriză a început pentru cehi într-o nouă formulă, pe gheață intrând în locul portarului Vejmelka,  Marek Langhamer (27 de ani, Ilves Tampere), care mai evoluase doar în două meciuri în grupe, acest turneu fiind și prima lui apariție în tricoul naționalei. Acesta a reușit să apere poarta într-o repriză care a adus un număr egal de ocazii pentru ambele echipe. Diferența de scor a fost micșorată la un singur gol în minutul 32:12 de către Jiří Smejkal (25 de ani, Lahti Pelicans).

 Fun fact: Jiří Smejkal a participat la Festivalul Olimpic al Tineretului European (FOTE aka EYOWF) organizat în Brașov, în 2013, alături de naționala U17 a Cehiei. La turneu au mai evoluat Pius Suter (), Denis Malgin (), Timo Meier () și Karel Vejmelka (), toți având evoluții foarte bune anul acesta, la Campionatul Mondial de Hochei pe Gheață.

Ultima repriză a meciului pentru medaliile de bronz a fost o demonstrație de forță, tehnică și pasiune din partea hocheiștilor cehi, care au reușit să înscrie din toate pozițiile posibile. Golurile au fost următoarele: minutul 40:51 David Pastrňák, minutul 42:29 Roman Červenka, minutul 43:37 David Pastrňák, minutul 54:42 (inferioritate numerică) David Kampf (27 de ani, Toronto Maple Leafs), minutul 58:08 (poarta goală) David Kampf, minutul 59:23 (superioritate numerică) David Pastrňák. SUA a reușit să mai înscrie o singură dată, când deja era mult prea târziu. Deși Thomas Bordeleau (20 de ani, San Jose Sharks) a reușit să marcheze în minutul 58:41, nici el, nici echipa sa nu s-au mai bucurat, nemaiexistând nicio șansă la medalie pentru selecționata nord-americană.

O contribuție extrem de importantă la acest turneu a avut-o și David Krejčí (36 de ani, HC Olomouc), fost coechipier al lui David Pastrňák la Boston Bruins până sezonul trecut, care a reușit în 10 meciuri jucate să înscrie de trei ori și să paseze decisiv de nouă ori.

 se afla în fața unui meci care repeta finala de anul trecut, când  s-a impus în prelungiri, prin golul lui Nick Paul (27 de ani, Tampa Bay Lighting).

Prima repriză a fost una de cunoaștere, calmă, cu mici ocazii de partea ambelor echipe, fără eliminări și fără alte evenimente.

Aseară nord-americanii au început mai bine, au deschis scorul în superioritate numerică prin tânărul Dylan Cozens (21 de ani, Buffalo Sabres) în minutul 24:00 și avantajul s-a păstrat până în ultima repriză.

Suomi a punctat doar în al cincilea minut al ultimei reprize, când se afla în dublă superioritate, iar Cole Sillinger (19 ani, Columbus Blue Jackets) are motive să fie supărat, eliminarea sa pentru “crosă ridicată” fiind cam ușor acordată (din reluările oficiale părând chiar nedreaptă).

Cât a stat el pe banca de pedepse, echipa lui a mai încasat un gol (deși de data aceasta în 5 vs. 4), ambele reușite fiind marcate de Mikael Granlund (30 de ani, Nashville Predators).

 Fun fact:  Mikael Granlund a reușit la interval de două minute să îi învingă pe ambii portari ai  Canadei, înscriind în minutul 44:13 în poarta apărată de Chris Driedger (28 de ani, Seattle Kraken) și în minutul 45:57 în poarta apărată de această dată de Matt Tomkins (27 de ani, Frölunda HC).

Discuțiile post-meci despre arbitraj au fost multiple, cum ne-au obișnuit orice microbiști, dar maniera de arbitraj a fost unitară, permițând puține, poate surprinzătoare pentru o finală de Campionat Mondial.

 Fun fact:  Canada, deși a terminat grupa pe ultimul loc calificabil în sferturile de finală, a avut o echipă extrem de închegată și de puternică, cu nu mai puțin de 10 jucători în top 30 marcatori ai turneului, iar  Finlanda doar patru.

 Suomi câștigă meritat, a fost echipa mai bună pe gheață și a avut un mic plus față de canadieni. Nordicii reușesc o dublă istorică:  aur la Olimpiadă,  aur la Mondial și se va scrie mult despre această generație!!!

 Roman Červenka a fost declarat cel mai valoros atacant al turneului , cu 17 puncte obținute în 10 meciuri, dintre care cinci goluri și 12 assisturi.

 Jussi Olkinuora a fost declarat cel mai valoros portar , dar și cel mai valoros jucător (MVP) al turneului, evoluând în toate meciurile jucate de echipa sa și obținând un procentaj incredibil, de 94,83%.

 Mikko Lehtonen a fost declarat fundașul  cel mai valoros al turneului, fiind de asemenea un pion important și în atac – în cele 10 meciuri jucate a obținut 12 puncte, din două goluri și 10 assisturi.
